In 2007, Vassar's men's basketball team had a breakout season, qualifying for the Liberty League playoffs for the first time since joining the league in 2000 and winning the most games in league play (eight) in school history. The Brewers capped off a sensational 18-10, 8-6 season with the championship of the ECAC Upstate/Metro Tournament with a dramatic 66-65 victory over Oswego State on Vassar's home floor. The Brewers were led by junior Lawrence Avitabile (pictured left), who was named to the Liberty Leauge First-Team. Last season, the Brewers also captured the championship of the Mid-Hudson Shootout for a third straight year and.

Historically, Vassar has advanced to the semifinals of the ECAC Metro Region Championship in 1998 and 2000.

Since becoming a varsity sport, these players gained regional recognition as members of the 1,000-point club: Ed Pittman (1982), Mike Carey (1990), Dave Cronan (1991), John Clancy (1992), the school's all-time scorer Caleb Wilkinson (1997), Tirek Gayle (2001), Brian Snodgrass (2003), Judson Winton (2005) and most recently Lawrence Avitabile.

An important factor in Vassar's success has been the program's ability to attract top scholar-athletes. Conferences and associations routinely include Brewer athletes in both academic all-conference as well as all-conference lists.

Practice begins in October and is held daily, with players attending unless there is an academic conflict. Players are generally on the court for two hours along with preparation and post-practice activity.
