Since joining the NCAA Division III in 1981, women's basketball steadily rose to become a force in the Northeast region.
Historically, the Brewers appeared in five consecutive postseason championships including an appearance in the 2000 ECAC Metro Championship game.
During the 2000-01 campaign, Vassar captured its first Seven Sisters Championship, a highly prestigious in-season tournament. The Brewers knocked off nationally-ranked Wellesley in the title game. That same season, Vassar upset sixth-ranked St. Lawrence on the Brewers' home court.
In addition to championship runs, past editions of the Brewers have excelled in several NCAA staticial categories. In 1992, Vassar was the top team in the country for 3-point field goal percentage. A year later, the Brewers finished seventh in the nation for team defense and in 1995, the team was fourth in this category.
Over the last 20 years, six players have surpassed the 1,000-point milestone including: Maureen McCarthy (1986), Jamie Pearson (1991), Nicki King (1992), all-time scorer Kirt Vogt (1996), Lisa Ercolano (2001) and Carleen Aubee (2003).
An important factor in Vassar's success has been the program's ability to attract top scholar-athletes. Conferences and associations routinely include Brewer athletes in both academic all-conference as well as all-conference lists.
Practice begins in late October and is held daily, with players attending unless there is an academic conflict. Players are generally on the court for two hours; combined with preparation and post-practice activity, the total commitment is about two and half hours a day.
