Men's cross country has earned significant team and individual successes in the past three decades, and is focused on only getting stronger in seasons to come. The team has been very competitive with consistent top finishes at invitationals, and numerous individual victories and honors. After joining the UCAA (now the Liberty League) in 1999, Vassar has had 3 individual championship honors, as well as 6 individual NCAA National Championship qualifiers and 15 NCAA All-Regional honors. An important factor in Vassar's success has been the program's ability to attract top scholar-athletes. Conferences and associations routinely include Brewer athletes in both academic all-conference as well as all-conference lists. Vassar runners seek excellence both at the races and in their studies, the comraderie with teammates and alumni.
Vassar runners enjoy scenic training surroundings in the Hudson Valley, with miles of trails on the 500-acre Vassar Farm and a variety of natural surface training loops on campus. The campus cross country course is considered to be challenging, scenic and enjoyable by coaches and competitors. Vassar's home course includes two loops, which wind around the campus golf course and the crowd-lined Sunset Lake, and consists of moderately rolling terrain with two steep hills. Walker Field House and the Athletic Fitness Center provide additional valuable training resources such as the pool, weight room, and state of the art athletic training facilities including hot and cold whirlpools. Practice begins in late August with daily practices.
Competitions are held outside of class time on most Saturdays beginning on the second weekend of September and running through the third weekend of November. Vassar sponsors our own annual invitational each September and competes in the Liberty League against Clarkson, Hamilton, Hobart, RPI, Saint Lawrence and Union. Major invitational meets typically include some of the strongest teams in the Northeast, and in November the team races at the NCAA Atlantic Regional meet where individuals and teams can qualify for NCAA Division III National Championships.
