Eiko & Koma Performance, September 2 Tuesday, first day of classes
Kenyon Hall, Frances Daly Fergusson Dance Theater 7 pm
Twenty-five years ago, Eiko & Koma's groundbreaking duet, “Grain,” gave visceral shape to the pain of hunger. A generation later, joined by young Cambodian painters-turned-performers Charian and Peace, their collaboration has expanded into an intimate dance tribe and “Grain” has grown into a full-evening work that explores hunger as the desire for life itself. The evening incorporates Japanese, Tibetan and Indonesian folk music as well as live painting. Lighting design is by David Ferri. Total running time is estimated as 75 minutes.
Funding credits: Hunger is a Joyce Theater 25th anniversary commission. Co-commissioned by the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis.
Produced by Inta, Inc. in association with Asia Society.
Open to all, seating on a first come, first serve basis.

Jody Sperling/Time Lapse Dance Performance, November 3, Monday Kenyon Hall, The Frances Daly Fergusson Dance Theater, 7:30pm
Jody Sperling/Time Lapse Dance will present a program including a performance of Ghosts, a work developed during a collaborative residency with Vassar lighting designer David Ferri. In this work, Sperling pays homage to modern-dance pioneer Loie Fuller, who mesmerized fin de siecle audiences, with her spectacles of fabric, light and motion. Ghosts moves Fuller’s vocabulary of billowing undulations and iridescent illuminations into the 21st-century. The dance, which plays with the appearance and disappearance of the body, is set to an extraordinary musical composition by Quentin Chiappetta for piano, percussion and cello which echoes Javanese gamelan. The dancers revolve, dervish-like, in huge silken costumes a la Loie, under multi-hued lights and hypnotic media projections. In an explosive moment, Sperling herself, as soloist, becomes the source of illumination as LED lights underneath her costume flash in successive patterns.
Jody Sperling is a dancer-choreographer based in New York City who is internationally known for her reinterpretations of Loie Fuller's art. Sperling is the founder and Artistic Director of Time Lapse Dance, a company that brings a postmodern twist to vintage dance. (www.timelapsedance.com)
