Athletic Facilities Regulations and ID Policy

Mission Statement
The Vassar College Office of Athletics and Department of Physical Education strive to provide a comfortable and safe recreational facility and experience that is free of discrimination based on race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, disability, gender, color, national origin, marital status or religious belief. We further aim to provide an atmosphere that welcomes diversity and embraces tolerance.
General Policy
- Only users with a valid ID or valid guest pass will be permitted in the Athletic and Fitness Center (AFC).
- Tobacco, Alcohol and Drugs are strictly prohibited in the AFC.
- Use of the Athletic Facilities is a privilege. Please respect our policies and regulations.
- Children under the age of 14 must be accompanied by a parent or be supervised at all times.
- The enforcement of our policy and regulations relies on the diligence of our student-workers. Please cooperate with their decisions.
ID Policy
- The purpose of the ID policy is to:
- Maintain the security of the building and equipment within
- Prevent unauthorized use of the facilities
- Provide a comfortable recreational facility for authorized users
- Protect the institution from liability of unauthorized users
- The Athletic and Fitness Center at Vassar College is reserved solely for the use of Vassar College students, faculty, administrators, staff, alumnae/i and family members of the Vassar College Community.
- All family members should have their own ID to gain access to AFC.
- While this policy is not new, the enforcement of such policy has been minimal, but will be diligently enforced beginning August 30, 2004.
- All users must enter through the main entrance to the AFC.
- All Vassar College members entering the AFC will be asked to swipe a valid identification card to the attendant at the front desk. Entrance to the AFC through any other door is prohibited.
- If one cardholder is entering the AFC and has swiped his/her card to enter the building, presentation of the ID will not be necessary. When multiple users are entering the building at the same time, all users will be requested to swipe their ID cards at the front desk to determine validity.
- Anyone found to be assisting entrance for unauthorized guests through other doors will be asked to leave the facility. Facility privileges for habitual offenders will be subject to suspension.
Guest Policy
- Only Vassar Community members holding a valid ID card will be allowed to sign in a guest to use the athletic facilities. Children of Vassar College employees, however, will not be afforded the privilege of signing in a guest.
- One guest per cardholder will be permitted to use the facilities at a given time.
- Each guest must sign a liability waiver form located at the front desk of the AFC.
- Each cardholder bringing a guest to the AFC will be asked to sign-in and assume responsibility for the guests presence and behavior.
- Each guest will be presented with a one-day guest pass that will be deemed invalid at the end of the day written on the card.
- Guests must have a pass with them at all times. Users without a card or guest pass will be asked to leave the facility for the remainder of that day.
Shoe Policy
- The purpose of the shoe policy is to:
- Maintain the cleanliness of the facilities to avoid breakdown of the fitness equipment
- Prevent marking of competition and practice surfaces
- Users of the AFC will not be allowed to wear shoes from the outside to work out in the Fitness Center, Gym or Walker Bays.
- Users are asked to bring a clean pair of sneakers for use in all parts of the facility.
- Please change shoes in the Atrium area before using any facilities or equipment.
- Black-soled or marking shoes are prohibited in the new Gym, Walker Bays, Squash courts and Multi-Purpose Room.
- We ask that users be mindful of the mud, dirt or snow on their shoes before entering the AFC. During inclement weather, we ask that users take care to minimize the tracking of dirt, mud and snow into the AFC.
Fitness & Weight room
- ALL users must first complete a training session concerning the proper use and mechanics of cardio and CYBEX machines. Call x7471 for training session times.
- Users must be 16 years of age or older to use the fitness and weight room.
- Children 14 or 15 years of age may use the fitness and weight room after completing a training session, but must be accompanied by a parent at all times.
- Use of cardio-vascular machines (treadmills, ellipticals, stair-masters, stationary bicycles) will be limited to 30 minutes at a time while others are waiting. A sign-in binder is available at the fitness desk to sign-up for machines when they are being used.
- Physical Education class members will have priority on all machines during class time.
- With the exception of water bottles, no food or water will be permitted in the fitness center.
- Sandals and flip-flops will not be permitted in the fitness center.
- Shirts must be worn at all times by all users in the fitness center.
- Do not drop or throw weights. Please clear all bars and return weights to their appropriate racks.
- Towels and simple green are provided to wipe down all machines. Users should clean machines following each use.
- A period of quiet time will be reserved between 6-9 AM for the fitness and weight room. The stereo and volume of the televisions will not be turned on.
- Following quiet hours, the fitness desk attendant will control the stereo system and televisions. Please respect their decisions accordingly.
- Please keep all bags against back wall and out of the way of other users.
- Please report any inappropriate activity, problems or injury immediately to the desk attendant or Jon Martin, x5344.
Swimming Pool
General
- Users of the swimming pool must be 16 years or older, unless accompanied and supervised by an attentive adult on the pool deck or in the water.
- Lap swimming will be given priority in all lanes except lane 1.
- We ask that all parents please educate and be attentive of children using the pool.
- We ask that inexperienced swimmers be aware of their limitations and take proper precautions to prevent any injuries.
- All children under the age of 6 must have a parent in the pool with them at ALL times.
- The lifeguard has FINAL authority on all issues. These rules are designed for your safety. Any inappropriate actions, problems or injuries should be reported immediately to the lifeguard and Jon Martin, x5344.
Safety
- Diving from pool deck is allowed only in water OVER 8 feet deep.
- Use of starting blocks is exclusively reserved for members and coaches of the Varsity Swimming and Diving team.
- Use of flotation devices (i.e. rafts, floaties) is strictly prohibited.
- No running on the pool deck or in the locker room.
- No hanging or standing on lane lines.
- No swimming under the bulkhead.
- The use of any toys or other items in the pool will be left to the discretion of the lifeguard on duty.
- Swimsuits are required (cut-offs are not permitted). Street clothes are not permitted in the pool.
- Users under the age of 18 must demonstrate a basic swimming proficiency for each academic semester and summer session to the lifeguard.
- Skill 1: Swim 25 yards of crawl or backstroke or a combination of the two without stopping, holding onto the lane line or wall.
- Skill 2: Tread water for 30 seconds (head must be kept above water surface for entire time).
- Skill 3: Survival float for 1 minute (This must be a restful survival float during which the user is not treading water or struggling to keep the body near the surface.
- A record of those who have passed will be kept in the Lifeguard Manual.
- Anyone who is unable to pass this test must have a parent in the water with them at ALL times.
Hygiene
- All users must shower before entering the pool deck.
- No street shoes are permitted on the pool deck.
- No food or drinks are permitted on pool deck.
- Young children who are not yet potty-trained should wear waterproof diapers or plastic, leak-proof coverings over regular diapers while using the pool.
Diving Boards
- Diving well will only be open when two lifeguards are on duty.
- Use of the high dive is exclusively reserved for members and coaches of the Varsity Swimming and Diving team.
- No hanging from the end of the board.
- Only one bounce is permitted before jumping.
- Particular dives and stunts are at the discretion of the lifeguard on duty.
- Diver must swim to the edge of the pool after jumping.
Use of Equipment
- Pool patrons may use equipment (i.e. kickboards, pull buoys, aqua belts) available. This equipment is to be used for training purposes only, and not to substitute for a lack of swimming skills/ ability.
- Users of running belts, fins, etc. must rinse the equipment with fresh water before returning it to the proper place.
- Patrons must return all equipment to proper place, whether on pool deck or in equipment room.
Running Track
- We ask that you adhere to the direction of running/walking that is indicated for each day. This will prolong the life of the track surface.
- The track WILL be closed during Varsity events in the gym. We apologize for the inconvenience.
Multi-Purpose Room
- The use of the multi-purpose room will be given priority to reservations.
- Multi-purpose room is open for general use when no reservations have been made.
Erg Room
- The old fitness center/ boxing room/ Multi-purpose room on the balcony in Walker Fieldhouse will now be use as the Varsity Rowing Team Erg Room.
- Use of this room is exclusively reserved for members and coaches of the Varsity Rowing Team.
Locker Rooms
- The Athletic and Fitness Center and Walker Fieldhouse offer a number of locker room options for general users.
- Due to the Kenyon renovation project, the team rooms behind the equipment room will be exclusively reserved for members of the Varsity Teams assigned to those locker rooms each season.
- Two locker rooms are available in Walker Fieldhouse and are adjacent to the swimming pool. There are three small locker rooms available within the general locker room. Two of these locker rooms will be available for general use during the entire year. One will be reserved for members of the Varsity Swimming and Diving Team during competition season (September-February).
- A men's and women's faculty locker room is available on the balcony of Walker Fieldhouse. Contact Jon Martin at x5344 to reserve a locker.
- Lockers in the general locker rooms are for same day use only. Overnight storage in lockers is prohibited. Locks will be cut on a regular basis and contents will be stored in the lost and found.
Prentiss Fields
- Prior reservation and approval is required for use of the fields.
- Pets are not allowed within the fences of Prentiss Complex.
- Absolutely no golf practice will be allowed on Prentiss Fields.
- Please drive all vehicles along the fence unless in the case of an emergency.
Policy Implementation:
- Student workers will be trained according to their respective positions in the Athletic Facility (desk attendants, equipment manager assistants, lifeguards) prior to beginning work.
- Every effort will be made to educate the community through pamphlets, web site, e-mail and signage of new and existing policies. Emphasis will be placed on our wish to offer a pleasant experience and service, and the necessity of compliance to accomplish such goals.
- All concerns or suggestions regarding policy should be referred first to Jon Maretin, Interim Athletic Facilities Manager, x5344.
- Campus security will be called upon immediately to address any safety or behavior concerns within the facility.
- Review of policies will be conducted each semester.
- Student Workers will be given the AFC policy and will be held responsible for enforcing this policy.
- Checklists for proper everyday procedure with regard to said policies will be given to student workers during training.
- Feedback for appropriate and inappropriate behavior will be given to student workers throughout the course of the year and documented.
- Student workers that are unfit for their position or are unable to make shifts on time and according to schedule will be replaced.
- Monitoring of student workers will be done by three equipment managers, facility manager, summer facility manager and aquatics director.
