 In 1984, fencing became a varsity sport at Vassar.
From 1987 to 1989, Vassar won the foil title at the Middle Atlantic Collegiate Fencing Association Championship while finishing second at the 1988 MACFA Championships and third at the 1989 event.
For the 1998-99 season, the Brewers began competing in the prestigious Intercollegiate Fencing Association, which includes Ivy League schools. In the 2005-06 season, Vassar defeated Yale 14-13 for the first time in school history.
Recent standouts such as Justin Bernstein '06, have qualified for NCAA regional and national championships and performed with the best in the nation.
