BREWERS RALLY, DOWN NEW PALTZ 6-1

 

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- Vassar erupted for five goals in the second half to break a 1-1 tie as the Brewers defeated SUNY-New Paltz 6-1 in field hockey action Wednesday afternoon.

Sophomore midfielder Emily Learner (Hollis, N.H.) got the Brewers on the board at 6:51 in the first half on an unassisted goal. Freshman forward Musu Jackson-Buckner (Buffalo, N.Y.) tied the game at one, with less than six minutes to go in the half. Junior midfielder Ellen Ridyard (Jenkintown, Penn.) gave the Brewers the lead five minutes into the second half when she slammed a shot past freshman goalie Erica Engstrom (Montauk, N.Y.) for the goal. Freshman forward Leah Spigelman (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored less than two minutes later to make it 3-1.

Sophomore midfielder Kaitlin Harvie (E. Montpelier, Vt.), freshman forward Katherine Ross (Williamsburg, Va.) and junior defender Maureen Kenealy (Wellesley, Mass.) also added goals for the 6-1 final.

Junior Tara Trifon (Coronado, Colo.) and sophomore Sharla Alegria (No. Dighton, Mass.) combined to make seven saves for Vassar, 2-2 overall. Engstrom stopped eight shots for the Hawks, 1-4.
