Field Hockey was established at Vassar in 1915 when an English physical education instructor organized the first team. Today, the Brewers compete in the annual Seven Sisters Championship, host the Betty Richey Tournament and vie for a spot in the Liberty League Championship. In 1996 and 1998, the team qualified for the New York State Women's Collegiate Athletic Association Championship and in 2000 they made both the ECAC and NYSWCAA championships. Numerous players have been named All-Liberty League (formerly the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association) and in 2000 the Brewers posted their best record in school history.

An important factor in Vassar's success has been the program's ability to attract top scholar-athletes. Conferences and associations routinely include athletes in both academic all-conference as well as all-conference lists.

Practice begins in late August and is held daily, with players attending unless there is an academic conflict. Players are generally on the field for two hours along with preparation and post-practice activity.
