In just four seasons, Vassar's women's golf program has gone from a club team to a participant in the NCAA Division III National Championships. The Brewers, who began intercollegiate play in the fall of 2003 were one of only 20 teams in NCAA Division III to compete for the 2007 national championship. Earning the NCAA bid based on strength of schedule and quality of play, the women's golf team became the youngest program in terms of longevity to compete in the NCAA Tournament.
It was clear that the program was on a fast track in the fall of 2004, when, after only one season of intercollegiate play, the Brewers captured the season-opening Elmira Tournament.
Later that season, Vassar finished third in the highly competitive New York State Tournament and capped off the year by capturing the inaugural VC Invitational in spring, 2005.
Throughout the 2005-06 season, Vassar continued to make dramatic improvements to the program, bolstering its schedule and tournament play and continuing to attrack top-level women's golfers.
In the 2006-07 season, the program elevated itself. Vassar won the Cortland Invitational, finished third at a strong St. Lawrence Invitational, third at the Middlebury Tournament and fourth at the Williams Invitational to close out the fall season. Then came the moment in history when the program "arrived." In head-to-head competition against perennial power and top-20 ranked Williams College in Port Luce, Florida, Vassar defeated the Ephs, 355-368. It was a crowning achievement for the program and enhanced Vassar's prospects at becoming an at-large team in the NCAA Division III Tournament.
Practice facilities for the women's golf team include the on-campus Vassar College Golf Course, Casperkill Golf and Country Club and the McCann Golf Course.
An important factor in Vassar's success has been the program's ability to attract top scholar-athletes. Conferences and associations routinely include Brewer athletes in both academic all-conference as well as all-conference lists.
Practice will begin in late August and is held daily, with players attending unless there is an academic conflict. Players are generally on the course, driving range or practice areas for two hours along with preparation and post-practice activity.
