POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (August 22, 2008) -– The Vassar men’s and women’s volleyball teams have long prided themselves for having excellence both on and off the court. The athletic accomplishments have been numerous, highlighted by the women’s team winning six straight Liberty League Championships and appearing in five of the last seven NCAA Tournaments. The men’s team won the 2008 North East Collegiate Volleyball Association (NECVA) Championship and advanced to the championship game of the Molten’s after a magical season in which the Brewers finished the year ranked No. 2 in the nation. Both programs have distinguished themselves academically as well, highlighted by an Academic Team Award that was recently announced by the Lexington, KY-based American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA). Vassar was one of only three schools across all NCAA Divisions to place both its women’s and men’s team on the AVCA list that recognized a record 353 teams. The Brewers were joined by Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Stanford University. Vassar’s men’s team earned the award for a third time, the most overall for a collegiate men’s program.

MATSUYAMA, JAPAN (August 26, 2008) -- Batting .700 after three games, Vassar junior Lilly Jacobson (Reno, NV) is excelling in international play as the leftfielder for the undefeated USA Baseball team at the 3rd Women’s World Cup of Baseball (WWC) in Matsuyama, Japan. In three games leftfielder Jacobson is 7-10 with three RBI, seven runs scored, and two triples.

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (August 21, 2008) -- Junior Lilly Jacobson (Reno, NV/Wooster), a member of the Vassar College baseball team, has been selected to play for the USA Women’s Baseball Team at the 3rd Women’s World Cup of Baseball (WWC) in Matsuyama, Japan from August 24-29. Jacobson was named to the 18-member roster, which had been whittled down from a 30-player Final Trials in Compton, CA from August 16-21.

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (August 21, 2008) –- Chelsea Katzenberg, a 2008 Vassar graduate, begins her first year as the assistant director of sports information at her alma mater. Katzenberg, who graduated from Vassar in May 2008 with a Bachelor of Arts in both English and History, had worked in the sports information office as a student assistant for three years. During that time she assisted with the publicity and promotion of Vassar’s 27 Division III intercollegiate sports. Katzenberg was responsible for game day coverage of men’s and women’s soccer, field hockey, men’s basketball and baseball.

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (August 19, 2008) -- Fresh off a successful playing career at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida, Josh King joins the Vassar men’s basketball program as assistant coach. Head coach Del Harris made the announcement.

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (August 19, 2008) -- After serving as the head swim coach at Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois, Paul Kueterman joins Vassar College as the assistant men’s and women’s swimming and diving coach. Head coach Lisl Prater-Lee made the announcement.

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (August 19, 2008) -- A 2004 graduate of Vassar College, Nicole Sausto-Grady returns to her alma-mater as the assistant women’s soccer coach. The announcement was made by head coach Richard Moller. After one year playing for Temple University, Sausto-Grady transferred to Vassar, where she was a starting defender for three years, earning Liberty League All-Acadmic Team honors in each year.

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (August 18, 2008) – Luke Ruppel, who has fourteen years of head-coaching experience at all levels, has been named interim women’s head basketball coach at Vassar College. The announcement was made by Sharon Beverly, Director of Athletics & Physical Education. Ruppel takes over for previous head coach Angel Mason, who accepted an assistant coaching position at her alma mater, Butler University in Indianapolis, IN.

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (August 13, 2008) –- Del Harris, who has served as an assistant men’s basketball coach at such renowned schools as Morgan State, Virginia Military Institute and the University of Richmond, has been named interim head men's basketball coach at Vassar College. The announcement was made by Sharon Beverly, Director of Athletics & Physical Education. Harris succeeds longtime coach Mike Dutton, who accepted the position of Director of Athletics and Boys Basketball Coach at Yarmouth (ME) Academy after coaching at Vassar since 1994.

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (July 3, 2008) –- By virtue of hosting Vassar’s first intercollegiate home event on September 6, the men’s and women’s cross country teams hold the honor of kicking off the Fall athletics season. As usual, the Fall has the largest number of teams in competitive action, a bakers dozen to be exact, highlighted by the opening of refurbished Prentiss Field. The $8.3 million project features, among other things, brand new fields for both soccer teams and field hockey. The cross country teams will have a new venue for the annual VC Invitational, the Vassar Farm.

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (June 18, 2008) – Good things happen to those who are patient and for Vassar freshmen Greg Katz and Max Willner the wait was certainly worth it. The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) recently announced that Katz (Baldwin, NY) and Willner (Bronx, NY) were named to the 2008 ITA Division III Men’s All-American Team.

PITTSBURGH, PA (June 15, 2008) -- This past weekend, four members of Vassar's Women's Rugby Team participated at the USA Rugby Territorial Championships. Flyhalf Elise Okusami, Number 8 Dani Goodman-Levy, and flankers Keri Peacock and Keke Hopson all wore the blue and green jersey of the Northeast Women's Under 23 team which won tier II of the competition.

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (June 6, 2008) –- While summer has yet to officially begin, it’s never too early to mark your calendar for the Fall athletics season. Both of Vassar’s men’s and women’s soccer teams have completed ambitious 2008 schedules that will hopefully culminate in a pair of Liberty League Championship berths on November 7-8 at a site to be determined based on final standings. The women’s teams get the early opener, traveling to Springfield, Mass for a September 6 game against Elms College at 3:30 pm. The men’s team follows three days later with its own away game under the lights against Mount St. Mary on September 9 at 7:00 pm.

SAINT PETER, MN (May 17, 2008) –- Despite losing in the quartefinals of the NCAA Division III Championship this afternoon at Gustavus Adolphus College, sophomore Nicole Pontee achieved a status only a select few are able to obtain: All-America status. Only the top 32 players nationally are selected for the singles championship, and those that advance to the round of 16 are named collegiate All-Americans. Pontee advanced two rounds, losing her quarterfinal match to Megan McCooey of Tufts, 7-5, 6-3. Pontee becomes the seventh Vassar women's player to earn this prestigious honor and her quarterfinal finish matches that of Hannah Palmer '92, who also advanced as far as the quarters. Vassar’s previous All-Americas include Kelly Graham and Debbie Sharnak, class of 2007, Palmer '92 and Laura Parker '87. In addition, Stacy LeBaron '90 and Alicia Quinby '89 earned All-American honors in doubles in 1989.

SAINT PETER, MN (May 16, 2008) -- Sophomore Nicole Pontee, the Liberty League Performer of the Year, won two three-set matches today to advance to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III Championships being held at Gustavus Adolphus College. Pontee won her first match in comeback fashion and her second in difficult playing conditions.
