In 2001, Varsity Men's Lacrosse joined the Liberty League, which marked a transition for the Brewers as they began play with a conference schedule for the first time.   The Liberty League routinely boasts 4-5 teams ranked in the top 50 of Division III.   Most seasons at least 1-2 teams will earn a top 25 ranking.

An important factor in Vassar's success has been the program's ability to attract top scholar-athletes with the opportunity to get a top-notch education, while immediately competing for a starting position and having the chance to impact the program right away. Practice begins in mid-January and is held daily, with players expected to attend unless there is an academic conflict. Practices generally last for two and a half hours; combined with preparation and post-practice activity, the total commitment is about three hours a day.
