VASSAR TRIPS UP KING'S POINT 13-10 Vassar College Men 13 v USMMA, Kings Point Men 10 Tries: Jake McDougal (1) & Frank Sharpe (1). Vassar opened their campaign on the road at USMMA, Kings Point. This was not a game that will count in the divisional standings but it did count for alot to these 2002 Brewers. They dominated the first half and should have scored at least two more tries as they battered away at the mariners goal line but in the end they had to settle for just 2 tries and a penalty goal. Thirteen points didn't seem like it would be enough and as if to confirm that the Mariners scored right at the end of the half to make it 13-5. Perhaps the Vassar men felt as if they were in unfamiliar territory as they set up base camp in the USMMA twenty-two! The forwards drove lineouts and continually surged towards the line only to be held up just short. The team will need to work on mauling and finishing off a driving maul if they are to more effective. But then the heavens opened and torrential rain threatened the game however, it quickly blew through. This just added to both team's problems as the ball was now like a piece of soap. A quick tapped penalty by co-captain Tony Baldor and pass to Jake McDougal allowed the big man to slither over "Dan Wolff-like" in the corner and then another tapped penalty was given to Frank Sharpe and he bulldozed his way over for a try. Vassar gave up the one score after a wayward kick out of defence was returned with interest and at the half it was 13-5. USMMA were the Met NY Champions last season and playing at home they probably felt that the second half would be theirs. Vassar started badly and were pinned in their own 22 but gradually they inched their way out of difficulty. The team did a good job of holding their defensive shape and on the occasions when the defence was breached there was cover aplenty. USMMA kept trying to swing the ball wide which was difficult given the wet ball and were either repelled or they dropped the pass and so Vassar was able to hang on despite one more try scored. Evan Milliken gave his opposite number a clinic in loosehead play, Christian Bruckhart was excellent in the lineout, and Jason Fotinatos had some nice touches. The team has quite a bit of work to do if they are to do themselves justice but this was a great start to the year.
