Vassar College Men 24 v Sacred Heart Men 7
Tries: David McCarthy (1), Christian Bruckhart (1), Jason Fotinatos
(1), & Chris Bedevian (1).
Cons: Brian Roach (2).
"Run Forrest run!" That was the cry that went up as David
McCarthy sprinted down the left sideline to put Vassar up after an
initial defensive spell. The quick winger scored and Vassar settled
down to play a good 15 minute spell which produced another try from
Christian Bruckhart. Brian Roach stepped up and cooly converted to
make it Vassar 12-0. It seems Brian has finally found something he
can do well on a rugby field for he has a smooth natural strike of
the ball. But Sacred Heart came back running hard and straight at
the Vassar defence and they popped through the middle to score under
the posts. But it was Vassar who struck next just before half time.
Jason Fotinatos ran well down the right wing after some good work
earlier by Tony Baldor and it was a 19-7 margin at the interval.
The Brewers had a poor start to the second half but battled their
way downfield and were eventually rewarded by a Chris Bedevian try
late in the game. There were some excellent driving mauls and some
powerful runs from the backrow of Bedevian, Sharpe and Bruckhart.
Man of the match would probably go to Max Marquardt who straightened
the line, picked off passes, and was physically strong in the tackle
and with the ball. Another who came close to such honors was Frank
Sharpe. In the first 20 minutes of the match he was like a raging
bull stiff-arming and battering the opponents and the crowd loved
every minute of it.
This team has plenty of guts and still has oceans of room for improvement
technically. But today's win makes it 2 in a row and they are 1-0
in divisional play so spirits are high. Next up are neighbours New
Paltz and the battle for the Hudson Valley unofficial championship
begins!
