POUGHKEEPSIE CHAMPS!

Vassar College Rugby
Saturday October 12, 2002
Poughkeepsie, NY

Vassar College Men 20 v Marist College Men 12
Tries: Frank Sharpe (2) & Chris Bedevian (2).

This was a game that Vassar never looked like losing despite the score being as close as 15-12 after 10 minutes of the second half. It was also a difficult game as these local derby's always are and especially so coming right after the team's first defeat last weekend against Army. A superbly driven lineout put the Vassar forwards over for a 5-0 lead and then a strong run from flanker Frank Sharpe made it 10-0 and it looked like Vassar would take control and rack up a big score. But the neighbors were angered and came fighting back driving in a lineout of their own and at the half it was 10-5.

Vassar kept plugging away with their simple game plan and played some good tight rugby. Hard running off the fringes and some deft little kicks from Sean Devendorf kept them going forward. It was the little things that mattered like Max Marquardt running hard switches, Edwin Cintron penetrating off the rucks, and a disciplined defence. Frank Sharpe and Chris Bedevian added to their accounts and Vassar finished 20-12 winners.
Vassar will likely play Fordham or Rutgers in the Met NY quarterfinal next weekend and their season continues with another win.
