Cambridge, MA
Vassar College Men 5 v Harvard University Men 54
Tries: Chris Bedevian (1).
It was a cold early start for the Vassar lads as they travelled north
to Cambridge, MA to take on very strong Harvard side. The Ivy League
school were the Beast of the East Division I winners last spring and
last week played Army close eventually losing 26-19. The task for
Vassar was formidable.
In the first 20 minutes Vassar held their own even though Harvard
monopolized possession. Assistant coach Aidan Mara was very impressed
with the commitment in the tackle and to the breakdown. But Harvard
made the early breakthrough and went up by three tries before Vassar
replied. The Vassar score was a pearler. Despite the windy conditions
Edwin Cintron threw perfectly to the back where Chris Bedevian lept
and delivered the ball to Frank Sharpe on the peel. Sharpe went up
centerfield breaking tackles and from the ensuing ruck there was a
penalty. Quick thinking by Tony Baldor allowed the backs to switch
the play left and Bedevian popped up again in the back line, steped
inside, and scored.
The team was lifted by the score and they contested right to the end
against a team that will most probably go to nationals. This was a
first ever for the Vassar men and afterwards they earned the respect
from their New England neighbors as both teams chatted and it was
offered that this was the best Met. NY team in the playoffs for the
last 6 years!
The second half started promisingly with some Vassar pressure and
Max Marquardt linked well with the forwards after switching with Devendorf.
The team started to put patterns together but lost ball after several
phases and it was returned with interest!
Vassar were starved of possession and spent most of the day tackling
anything and everything. "The lads put their bodies on the line.
It was a great defensive effort and they should all be proud,"
said Mara.
