women's coach In 1995, Tony Brown became the first full-time rugby coach in Vassar's history. Numbers have consistently increased over the years and the squad usually is from 40-50 players. The hard work of the previous coaches and the enthusiasm of the players have contributed to this growth.

"We have toured overseas regularly and nothing builds team spirit like a good tour," said Brown.

In 1998 Vassar went to England and played Exeter, Bath, and Brunel universities. The following year, the team traveled to Ireland where it faced Trinity, Waterford, and Ballincollig Women. In 2000, Vassar went undefeated on its England tour, beating Oxford, Cambridge, and Northampton universities. In March 2002 the women toured Australia being based in Sydney, New South Wales. In 2003 the team went to England & Wales. "Having a 2-week spring break means we can plan really good trips that include practices, games, and plenty of sightseeing." The 2005 team toward toured Argentina and in 2006 the destinations were England and France.

Brown moved to the United States in 1984 having played for St. Luke's College, Exeter, and then Wasps. He played for Northern Virginia Rugby Football Club and was selected to the 1985 Potomac Rugby Union select side comprised of players from the Washington D.C. metropolitan area. Brown retired from playing in 1986.

From 1988-95, Brown coached the George Mason University men's team in Fairfax, Virginia, and compiled a 110-52-6 overall record. Brown's teams beat several eastern powers including Army, Navy, and Penn State as well as twice winning the St. Patrick's Day Tournament and finishing runner-up at the Cherry Blossom, West Virginia University, and Commonwealth Cup tournaments. GMU finished the 1995 season ranked No. 3 in the East coast.

Brown also coaches the men's program at Vassar.

Vassar rugby exists to promote the sport of rugby union and to allow each student-athlete the opportunity to develop to their full potential in so far as their physical, mental, and emotional limitations allow. Each player is encouraged to enjoy the game and extend their abilities.
