Women Gather Momentum

Vassar College Rugby
Sunday September 22, 2002
Poughkeepsie, NY

It was Parent's Weekend at Vassar and both the men's and women's programs served up some exciting play for the large crowd as they swept aside both Sacred Heard men and women in divisional games. Then Rutgers women were sent packing early and as the dust settled after 5 games, (3 for the women and 2 for the men), Vassar had 4 wins, a total of 25 tries had been scored for the sum of 135 points! But there was a price to pay as two players on the women's team went down with injuries likely to miss the rest of the season!

Sunday September 22, 2002
Vassar College Women 62 v Sacred Heart University Women 0
Tries: Julie Half (3), Larkin Sealy (2), Val Griffeth (1), Dana Wasserman (1) Julia Rosen (1), Mollie Warren (1), Darcy Nelson (1), Jessica Fyles (1), & Cristy Shumaker (1).
Cons: Julia Rosen (1).

Julie Half got back to familiar ways at the Farm this weekend and scored a hat-trick of tries. She was more than ably supported by a pack which dominated in the loose although they had a few ugly early scrums and a back division that is growing in confidence. The backs were well served with quality ball and garnered 10 tries while the forwards scored the other 2.

The warm weather took a toll and players tired towards the end but it was Sacred Heart who were wishing that it was over sooner rather than later. The Catholic school have some strong running backs but they were denied any real opportunities and it was the Vassar backs that shone. Dana Wasserman has got it all. The Vassar right wing skinned her opposite number and scored a beauty of a try early when Julie Half fed her a perfect pass. Just prior to that Larkin Sealy on the left had been driven over by the forwards and scored another that went from a scrum - 8, 9, 15, 11. A penalty play saw the backs run "Chaos" and Val Griffeth won the judges votes for artistic impression as she dived spectacularly in for try number 5. Sacred Heart to their credit kept trying and had a couple of breakouts but good cover from Julie Half saw crunching tackles put in and the danger averted. At half time it was 35-0 and Vassar put in the subs.

The second half was more of the same but unfortunately winger Vivian Lee went down with an injured leg. It was later diagnosed as a break so the likelyhood of "Big Viv" being back this semester is slim to none. The biggest cheer of the match was for Jess Fyles who moved from prop to the wing and went over for her score. This was a case of the forwards winning the game and the backs deciding by how many!
