Vassar College Women XV 44 v Rutgers University Women "A"
0
Tries: Larkin Sealy (1), Sarah Turbett (2), Bette Stern (1), Cristy
Shumaker (1), Valerie Giffeth (1), Jess Johnson (1), & Nadia Brittingham
(1).
Cons: Valerie Griffeth (2).
Vassar fielded a team that was pumped up and ready for the confrontation
with Rutgers "A". In the forwards Hannah Van Winkle and
Amy Rubin were quite simply superb. Rubin in just her second rugby
game is showing the potential to play "A" side with strong
running and some good tackling. She is still somewhat lost and needs
to get into rucks and mauls and drive them forward but there is much
to build on. Van Winkle had some explosive runs of her own and scrummaged
well. But it was a great team effort with the forwards winning loose
ball and some savvy play by the backs.
Bette Stern scored a lovely try after several phases but in doing
so she injured her finger and it was broken. Larkin Sealy the "A"
side winger came in to play flyhalf and did a great job. Sarah Turbett
also showed what a talent she is playing flyhalf and scoring 2 well
deserved tries. Cristy Shumaker had the individual run of the game
as she burst off the fringe of a ruck to go about 50 yards outpacing
the defence for a peach of a score and it was great to see rookie
Jess Johnson get a try as she has been working hard.
This performance will send a shudder down the spine of the other Met
NY teams for it's likely that Rutgers will be one of the top 2 teams
in the other division!
