New Paltz v Vassar,
Battle of the Hudson

Sunday September 29, 2002
Vassar College Women 36 v New Paltz Women 0
Tries: Julie Half (1), Larkin Sealy (1), Dana Wasserman (2) Julia Rosen (1), Vanessa Chang (1).
Cons: Julia Rosen (3).

Vassar dominated this game from start to finish and although the team eased off the gas pedal in the second half it was as much a case of finding it difficult to understand the referee's interpretations as it was the improved defence by New Paltz. Vassar's women are now 2-0 in Met NY divisional play and it is very likely that they will advance to the Met NY playoffs as the number 1 team from the North Division. The problem that they have is that the standard of the playoff teams tends to be that much higher and it is something of a shock to the system. But in the meantime patterns of play can be worked on and rookies brought into the fold.

Sarah Griffin had an excellent first "A" game. Playing at inside center she was surrounded by good players who helped her settle in. Lydia Durand at outside center was playing well straightening the line but took an awkward fall and twisted her ankle. She went for an x-ray but it seems all is well and it's just a sprain. Amy Rubin was another rookie who benefitted from "A" side players with her and she is an inspiration to all she plays around. Her tenacity wrestling for the ball and charging runs are great to watch and no doubt intimidating for the opposition.

The tries came fast and furious in the first half with Dana Wasserman opening the Vassar account. This woman is playing with such confidence and enthusiasm she helps all in the team. Julie Half, Larkin Sealy, and then dana again made it 22-0 at the half. Vanessa Chang scored a try which followed a Rubin run held up just short of the line and Julia Rosen went under the posts after multiple phases caused the New Paltz defence to open like the Red Sea. Final 36-0.

Vassar College Women XV 5 v New Paltz Women 0
Tries: Emma Wellman (1).
Emma Wellman scored the try which gave the Vassar fifteen a hard earned win but it was a total team effort as New Paltz played several "A" team players again and were tough and physical. Vassar put together some great passages of play and recycled the ball time and time again only to be thwarted by New Paltz tacklers. Amanda Scott passed well to her new flyhalf Sarah Griffin and she ran hard at almost every opportunity. One would have thought she might have passed the ball a bit more often given that she has only previously played in the center but this was not the day for frills. Kat Edmundson alongside experienced hooker Kirsten Naito and rookie Robin Berger did a great job up front. The one casualty was Mariko Holland who was hit hard as she received a pass at outside center but as it turned out it was just a broken heart.
