Vassar College Women XV 29 v Hofstra Women "A" 0
Tries: Jasmine Harris (1), Vanessa Morris (1), Amanda Scott (2) and
Ai Ito (1).
Cons: Sarah Turbett (1) & Julia Rosen (1).
"Beam me up Scottie" would suggest that Scottie was onboard
the Enterprize and certainly Hofstra wished that had been the case,
but Vassar's Amanda Scott ran rampant scoring two tries to lead the
Brewers to a solid victory over the fledgling Hofstra women's program.
It was a joy to watch this group of youngsters take on Hofstra and
there were many notable contributions from all. Emily Purdy, playing
in front of her father and grandparents made a couple of great tackles
that would have done any NFL linebacker proud.
In addition Danielle Bayar was like the Rock of Gibraltar and in the
first half she was faced with at least 3 one on one situations which
all finished with the same result, a crunching tackle and Vassar's
defensive line had held.
The forwards outrucked and outhustled their heavier and larger Hofstra
opponents and that enabled the Vassar backs to move the ball or kick
it long when necessary. Sarah Turbett and Julia Rosen played a major
role in getting the team going forwards and that meant for a much
more pleasant day.
Jasmine Harris got back to her old ways, running over people, and
scored Vassar's first try and that was swiftly followed by a Vanessa
Morris try that the backrow forward deserved as she employed a well
known twister move that was successful! At the half it was 10-0.
The front row of Sarah Powelson, Kat Edmundson, and Becca Kirlin got
underneath their opposite numbers and drove the scrummage forward.
This led to poor quality ball for the Hofstra backs and they were
tackled well behind the gain line.
From a scrum centerfield Emma Wellman picked up and fed Amanda Scott
who ran with purpose and guile. She was almost caught by the winger
and then she slowed and zipped around the fullback. Game, set, and
match to Vassar because at 17-0 after the kick there was no way back
for Hofstra. Moments later at a deceptively slower pace Scottie did
it again this time! The icing on the cake was the ball going down
the backline to rookie Ai Ito and she dived over for a final good
try. and it was 29-0.
