Women Double Up - Winning at home and on the road!

It was something of a gamble as Vassar fielded two teams against Division I opponents, Columbia and Stony Brook, over break with many players unavailable! But it paid off as both sides earned good wins. Stony Brook went down 20-5 at Vassar College Farm while Columbia were shutout 26-0 in the Bronx.

Vassar College Women 20 v Stony Brook University Women 5
Tries: Hannah Van Winkle (2) & Darcy Nelson (2).

Pregame nerves were frayed with a number of players playing out of position but once the game started the focus was on pattern of play and things fell into place. Stony Brook threatened early with a few penetrating runs but the Vassar defence held. Then from a scrum about 10 yards from the Stony Brook line number 8 Darcy Nelson picked up and drove over to give the Brewers a 5-0 lead. Vassar had the edge up front when the forwards took the ball on at pace with flat passes from scrumhalf Emily Dorman. Jen Corliss, Kirsten Naito, and all the forwards enjoyed some good runs up field.

The second try came after the backs handled the ball down the line and from an ensuing ruck prop forward Hannah Van Winkle took a close pass, rumbled over, and it was 10-0. Stony Brook rallied and put together some good thrusts through center field and scored a good individual try right under the posts. The conversion was unsuccessful. So at 10-5 the game was very much in the balance. In fact Stony Brook threatened again and went over the line for what would have been a tying score. But a great tackle from Larkin Sealy forced a dropped ball and the moment had passed. Vassar were shocked back into action and once again it was Hannah Van Winkle who forced her way over the line as she took yet another flat pass at pace. Lydia Durand made a welcome comeback and played 20 minutes at flanker with no ill effects. She replaced freshman Jess Werner who had a good debut at flanker. Darcy Nelson rounded out the day with a try from a driven lineout. Vassar now move on to the Metropolitan New York Championship next weekend which will be held at Vassar.
