Women's Rugby News & Notes
POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 27, 2008) -- The University of New Brunswick from Canada visited the Vassar Farm on this beautiful sunny Sunday afternoon for the 2007-08 season finale. New Brunswick had played yesterday against Yale University and won that game 19-12, so the Brewers were under no illusions as to the task at hand. Injured and unable to play was Vassar's number 8 Dani Goodman-Levy, scorer of 4 tries the weekend before against Cal-Berkeley, but as has so often been the case this season everyone raised their game and put in a gutsy performance. ALBUQUERQUE, NM (April 20, 2008) -- Vassar is sometimes referred to as the Berkeley of the east and while the two schools might be aligned somewhat politically, they were poles apart on the rugby field this beautiful Sunday morning in Albuquerque. Vassar recorded an emphatic win and made it unequivocally clear that they are a top 10 collegiate Division I program in the U.S. this year. They scored 10 tries en route to a thumping 58-12 victory. ALBUQUERQUE, NM (April 19, 2008) -- It was the biggest of stages for the Vassar College Women’s Rugby team as they faced the Naval Academy in the round of 16 at the National Championship. The venue, Balloon Fiesta Park, in Albuquerque, New Mexico looks like an oasis with lush green fields surrounded by the desert landscape. The Naval Academy rolled out a big pack and backed it up with some strong running backs. Vassar, without 7 starters from the fall, was focused and committed. The next 80 minutes was absorbing and exciting as both teams went toe to toe. Vassar College Women 5 v Navy Women 21 Tries: Chrissy Lewis (1).
The first 10 minutes of this match was dominated by Navy as they kicked off and established field position. But some resolute tackling by the Vassar defenders and poor handling from the Navy backs meant that Navy did not come away with a score. There were worrying signs in those early exchanges for the Brewers as the scrum looked like it might be under pressure. The Vassar front 3 in the fall was Susannah White, Andrea Listenberger, and Hannah Roth and it was a unit that did not lack for size and strength. But today Becca Marcus, Alana Melton, and Natalie duRivage filled in and made a mockery of that selection all playing their hearts out. They settled down and although under pressure they managed to secure their own ball. Full Story | Send To Friend

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 12, 2008) -- In their last game before traveling to Albuquerque next week and a much-anticipated match-up with the Naval Academy, the Vassar College Women’s squad took on UConn under bright sunny skies with plenty of friends and family watching. The Brewers could probably have used a sterner test as preparation, but they kept their shape and produced 9 tries with some good support running. UConn never threw the towel in and kept tackling, but they were unable to apply any serious pressure with the ball in hand. Full Story | Send To Friend
PROVIDENCE, RI (April 5, 2008) -- It was just what the doctored ordered. A combative and well-prepared Providence College fifteen disrupted the Vassar lineout, scrummaged strongly, and tackled with determination. They were so successful that they held the Brewers scoreless in the first half. But Vassar’s territorial dominance and improved loose play eventually paid dividends. A difficult game in preparation for Nationals is what Vassar wanted and that's what the Friars provided. Full Story | Send To Friend
POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 3, 2008) -- he Vassar College Women played a scrimmage match against the local Hudson Valley Women’s Club. It was an opportunity to look at a couple of combinations and to have a good physical run-out as the team builds for Nationals. But there was a high price to pay as center Bridget Meade was tackled hard and broke her leg just above the ankle. It was a cruel blow to say the least for it was her first game back since last April and she had worked very, very hard to rehabilitate her knee. Full Story | Send To Friend
POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (March 29, 2008) -- The Vassar College Women took to their home field for the first game of the Spring 2008 season on a day that brought memories of last November. At 7:00 a.m. a flurry of snow gave way to a strong wind out of the north. The temperature was 30 degrees Fahrenheit but the wind-chill made it feel like 20 degrees! It was a wonder the players could catch anything as it was difficult to feel ones hands and faces were numb. But the visitors Cornell and the hosts made short measure of the winter-like cold and produced an open game with 7 tries to warm the hearts of the home spectators. Full Story | Send To Friend

BRUNSWICK, ME (November 11, 2007) -- It did not look good for the Brewers after 20 minutes against Brown University as they fell behind by 3 unconverted tries. Vassar had to win, or lose by less than 16 points, to be sure of advancing to Nationals and with three-quarters of the game left it was 0-15. Conditions were perfect for an open game, although it was a bit cold and breezy, and Vassar responded magnificently to make this a final to remember for players and spectators alike.
