Vassar's Office of Sports Information promotes and publicizes, on both a national and international level, each of Vassar's 23 intercollegiate sports that compete on the Division III level as a member of the newly-named Liberty League. Sports Information's primary responsibility is to disseminate information to members of both the print and electronic media as well institutions that Vassar competes against. Among Sports Information's many varied duties are press/media relations, editorial releases and feature stories, game and special event programs, newsletters, statistical maintenance and record keeping, web-content management and collaborative work with Vassar's Office of College Relations.

Director of Sports Information

Robin Jonathan Deutsch

Robin Jonathan Deutsch, is in his fifth year as the Sports Information Director at Vassar College, having been named to the position in August 2004 following a national search. At Vassar, Deutsch is responsible for the publicity and promotion of 27 intercollegiate teams in addition to responsibility for all marketing and licensing initiatives. He is an active member of the sports information profession, serving as a national publications coordinator for CoSIDA, the national organization of Sports Information Directors. In addition, he is serving on the ECAC-SIDA Marketing Committee. Among his many accomplishments at Vassar, more than 300 athletes have earned weekly recognition through Vassar’s affiliations – Liberty League, NECVA, AVCA, ECAC. This past men’s volleyball season, he was instrumental in securing the school’s first-ever AVCA All-America selections, helping to place two players on the First-Team and one on the Second-Team. In addition, more than 40 players have earned First-Team All-League Honors, 30 to the Second-Team and a dozen Coaching Staff of the Year honors. For his efforts in promoting Vassar's women's volleyball team, Deutsch earned the prestigious 2008 Grant Burger Media Award from the American Volleyball Coaches Association

Before arriving at Vassar, Deutsch was the Director of New Media and Information Services at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, MA (2000-2004), where he worked since 1991. At the Hall of Fame, Deutsch also served as Director of Marketing & Public Relations (1991-2000), responsible for all marketing, public relations, publishing, advertising and admission initiatives. During his 13 years at the Hall of Fame, Deutsch also managed the Hall’s yearly election and enshrinement process, developed the Hall's first-ever Web site in 1997 -- and subsequent versions up until 2004. He was an exhibit, content, design and project manager for the new $35 million Hall of Fame, which opened in 2003. During his tenure at the Hall, he earned a dozen Best In The Nation citations from CoSida, for excellence in publications, writing and graphics. He is a certified member of the National Association of Photoshop Professionals (NAAP).

A former Board member of the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA), Deutsch served as a columnist for Basketball Times and Eastern Basketball Magazine, from 1981 to 2005.

A 1983 graduate of Northeastern University in Boston, MA., Deutsch began his career as Director of Sports Information at St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia (1983-86), where at age 22, he became the youngest Division I SID in the history of the profession. Following St. Joseph’s, he joined the New York Times Magazine Group as an Editor with Tennis Magazine (1986-1991), where he managed the magazine’s tennis equipment coverage. In 1986, he was a national finalist for the prestigious Neal Award for an investigative piece on tennis equipment mail order fraud and his story was the only one in the history of the New York Times Magazine Group to appear in all of the groups’ commercial publications.

Chelsea Katzenberg

Chelsea Katzenberg, a 2008 Vassar graduate, begins her first year as the assistant director of sports information at her alma mater. Katzenberg, who graduated from Vassar in May 2008 with a Bachelor of Arts in both English and History, had worked in the sports information office as a student assistant for three years. During that time she assisted with the publicity and promotion of Vassar’s 27 Division III intercollegiate sports. Katzenberg was responsible for game day coverage of men’s and women’s soccer, field hockey, men’s basketball and baseball.

“To have the opportunity to hire one of my former students in this extremely important position is especially gratifying,” said Deutsch. “Chelsea was a vital part of the Sports Information Office as a student and I am excited that she will be serving as the assistant director. She is an outstanding writer, is extremely well-organized and proficient and has an exceptional grasp of college athletics.”

A native of Middlesex, VT., Katzenberg’s knowledge of college athletics comes first hand. She earned four letters as a member of Vassar’s women’s basketball team, serving as co-captain as a junior and senior. She was Vassar’s starting point guard as a junior and a senior.

After never starting a game in her freshman or sophomore seasons, Katzenberrg started 23 games her junior season. She tallied 148 points, third best on the team. She posted career highs in points (15) against both Hunter College and Clarkson University, and scored 9 points or more 7 times in the season. She was fourth on the team in rebounding (69) and had a career high 10 boards against Skidmore. Katzenberg led Vassar in assists and was 7th in the Liberty League in assists, 10th in steals and fifth in assists-to-turnover ratio (0.7). As a senior, she started all 22 games, leading the team in assists (2.1) and minutes played (34.4 mpg). She ranked second in free throw percentage (75.0%), third in rebounding (3.6), and fifth in scoring (5.1). Her rebounding, free throw percentage, field goal percentage and three point shooting percentage all improved in Liberty League play. She appeared in 85 games in her Vassar career.

A three-time Liberty League All-Academic selection, Katzenberg was Valedictorian of her high school class at U-32 in East Montpelier, VT, where she led the Raiders to the 2004 Division III State Championship and was named the Times Argus Player of the Year. As a scholastic player, Katzenberg was an All-State selection as a senior and led U-32 in scoring each of her four seasons playing. She earned Times Argus First-Team honors as a junior and senior, the two seasons she led the Raiders to the state semi-finals. In addition, Katzenberg was named a four-time All-Capital Division selection. While at U-32, Katzenberg lettered in soccer for three seasons, leading the Raiders in scoring as a senior. She was a two-time Capital Division selection and earned Times Argus First-Team honors.

A former staff writer for the Times Argus Sports Department, Katzenberg was the junior and senior class council president at U-32 and was the managing editor of the school newspaper.
