UNION PICKS UP KEY WIN OVER VASSAR IN MEN'S SOCCER
Dutchmen tally two breakaway goals, win conference match 2-0

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- Union College scored two breakaway goals in the second half to defeat Vassar College 2-0 in an Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association men's soccer game Friday afternoon at Prentiss Field.

Despite being outshot 11-2 in the second half and 15-6 for the game, the Dutchmen capitalized twice on Vassar turnovers that led to breakaway goals by junior midfielder Jeff Sullivan (Guilford, Conn.) 2:22 into the second half, and senior forward Peter Devine (Millbury, Mass.) 20 minutes later.

Junior Kevin O'Connor (Reston, Va.) turned in a solid second-half effort turning away all four of Vassar's shots on goal. Senior Paul Connors (No. Andover, Mass.) made one save for the Brewers in a game that was marred by seven cards, including one red.

Union (6-3-1, 1-2 UCAA) remains one game behind Skidmore for the final playoff spot. Vassar (5-3, 0-3 UCAA) falls two games behind and will need to defeat the Thoroughbreds when they face them tomorrow at Prentiss at 2 p.m. Union travels to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute tomorrow for a conference match at 2 p.m.
