Butler, Vaccaro score as
Brewers rejoin playoff hunt

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- Vassar College picked up a key Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association victory in men's soccer Saturday afternoon with a 2-1 victory over Skidmore College at Prentiss Field.

Senior forward Chris Vaccaro's (Berlin, N.J.) scored the game-winner midway through the second half to break a 1-1 tie. Vaccaro's shot ricocheted off of a Skidmore defender that eluded Thoroughbred keeper Rollie Kielman (Hinesburg, Vt.).

The Brewers controlled play for most of the first half. Junior forward Aldis Butler (Larkspur, Calif.) gave Vassar the lead when he took a pass from sophomore forward Joe DeMarco (Thornwood, N.Y.) and broke in on Kielman for his 11th goal of the season with six minutes to play in the period. Senior midfielder Owen Kendall (Pullman, Wash.) had a chance to make it 2-0 when he blasted a shot that hit the crossbar.

Senior defender Will Mudge (Hanover, N.H.) tied the game up early in the second half when he was brought down inside the Vassar box and converted a penalty kick for Skidmore.

Senior Paul Connors (No. Andover, Mass.) saved four shots for Vassar (6-3, 1-3 UCAA). Kielman had two stops for Skidmore (6-6, 2-2 UCAA).

Vassar moves within one game of Skidmore and Union for the final playoff spot. The Brewers move to non-conference play with a match against Hunter at Prentiss at 4 p.m. on Monday.
