VASSAR BREAKS UCAA WOMEN'S SOCCER DROUGHT
Daniel sets up two goals as Brewers defeat Clarkson
3-1
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.
-- Vassar College broke a 12-game conference losing
streak Friday afternoon in a 3-1 Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association women's
soccer victory over Clarkson University at Prentiss Field.
Senior forwards Lindsey Pilver (Murietta, Calif.),
Shannon Stagner (Austin, Texas), and junior Sarah Combs (Anchorage, Alaska)
tallied a goal apiece as Vassar picked up its first UCAA win in more than two
seasons (a 2-1 victory over Skidmore on 10-13-01).
Junior midfielder Maggie Daniel (Tyler, Texas)
assisted goals by Combs and Pilver in the first half as the Brewers led 2-0 at
the break. Freshman midfielder Katelyn Wagner (Troy, N.Y.) got Clarkson
(4-10-2, 1-5 UCAA) back in the game when she turned and fired a shot from the
18 yards out that beat sophomore goalkeeper Heather Jaffe (Belle Meade, N.J.).
With less than nine minutes to play and Clarkson
looking for the equalizer, Stagner put the game out of reach when she broke in
all alone on sophomore keeper Lauren Arredondo (Allendale, N.J.) and blasted a
shot inside left goalpost.
Sophomore Alice England (Salt Lake City, Utah) made
two saves in a perfect first half for Vassar (2-11, 1-5 UCAA). Jaffe added five
saves in the second frame.
Arredondo saved seven of ten shots on goal for
Clarkson. The Lady Knights will play at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. Vassar will look to dash St. Lawrence¹s playoff
hopes when it hosts the Saints tomorrow at 3 p.m.
