For more than two decades, the Vassar women have made a habit of winning.
In four of the last five years, the Brewers have qualified for the NCAA Division III national team championship (2001, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007). Most impressively, VC has captured the Liberty League and New York State Championships five straight years (2002-2006).
The most recent ITA poll lists Vassar at number 26 in the nation out of 360 Division III teams. In the Northeast region (110) Vassar is ranked 7th. The first doubles pair of Kelly Graham '07 and Debbie Sharnak '07 won the ITA Northeast Regional Tournament and qualified for the ITA Nationals in 2004. The pair was ranked 4th in the Northeast. Vassar's number one singles player, Sharnak, is ranked 5th regionally and 30th nationally. Second singles player Graham was ranked number 24th regionally in singles. In addition, the second doubles pair of Krista Romita '09 and Elysa Kliman '08 was ranked 17th regionally at the conclusion of the 2005-06 season. In the 2006-07 season, Nicole Pontee (pictured) was named the Liberty League Rookie of the Year.
In four of five last years, the Brewers have been one of only 26 teams nationally to qualify for the NCAA Division III national team championship. In the past 16 years, players have also qualified for the NCAA national singles and doubles tournaments, earning national rankings in both events. Most recently, Sharnak qualified in the 2004 and 2006 seasons -- advancing to the round of 16 in singles in 2004. That same season, Sharnak and Graham earned ITA All-America honors in doubles.
The Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll consistently places Vassar among the top teams in the Northeast region rankings and, for 16 years, in the national rankings as well. The Brewers finished the 2006 campaign ranked No. 7 out of 110 teams in the Northeast region and 26th nationally.
Vassar plays a complete fall and spring match schedule--including a spring break trip to California or Florida--against regional powers such as Williams, MIT, Wellesley and Wesleyan. Tournament play includes the ITA regional, the New York State Women's Collegiate Athletic Association Championship, Seven Sisters Championship and the Liberty League Championships.
An important factor in Vassar's success has been the program's ability to attract top scholar-athletes. Conferences and associations routinely include Brewer athletes in both academic all-conference as well as all-conference recognition. The Brewers have won an ITA All-Academic Team Award for eleven consecutive years.
