Vassar College has a long history with track and field. In 1895 Vassar was the site of the first women's track and field events in the United States, and in 2007 Vassar announced the beginning of a new varsity outdoor track program. In 1985 the Vassar Track Club was founded, providing students with the opportunity to compete in intercollegiate indoor and outdoor meets. For over 20 years Vassar runners have competed well against mixed Division I, II and III varsity programs, posting multiple ECAC qualifying marks.
Vassar's varsity track program will benefit from a new 8-lane sandwich-urethane competition track, and track athletes will benefit from state-of-the-art running facilities, a varsity-athlete weight room, track-side locker rooms and athletic training rooms, and miles of grass and dirt running surfaces. With some of the best training resources available, passionate teammates, and a collegiate history of innovation and excellence in the classroom and in athletics, Vassar track athletes will have all the support they need to rise to their highest level.
Vassar, an NCAA Division III college, competes in the Liberty League with Hamilton, Saint Lawrence and RPI, as well as against many of the colleges and universities in New York, New Jersey and New England.
Program
In the program's early years, we will focus on developing our strength in the running events. With a long and successful history of varsity cross country at Vassar, we have a strong base in the distance and middle distance events and are looking to continue to build on that base and develop our strength in the sprints, relays and hurdles. Though success on the track comes from individual development and improvement with each student-athlete working to surpassing their goals, track is a team sport. By developing each athlete's potential to the fullest, and fostering a friendly and supportive team atmosphere, we will succeed as a team.
To develop each student-athlete to their highest level of capability requires long-term commitment to improvement on behalf of the athlete, education, and individualized training. By learning proper movement, physiology, health, concentration and other performance and life skills, Vassar Track athletes make the most of their training and time at Vassar.
History
Vassar College was founded by Matthew Vassar in 1861 on the principles of providing a complete education for women. Mathew Vassar was an early advocate of exercise and physical health, and the college's field day provided the first opportunity in America for women to compete in track and field events ranging from the 100 yard dash to the "running broad jump." Field day continued annually until 1937, after which a "sports day" continued to foster other athletic events for women at the college.
The Vassar Student Association Track Club was founded by members of the cross country team and Coach Ron Stonitsch in 1985, competing against other schools with NCAA varsity programs. As the club evolved, it also took on sponsoring indoor competition & road races, and expanded to serve both competitive intercollegiate track racing and the campus running community at large. The team has sponsored an annual 24 hour relay around Main Building on campus, and in 2005 and 2006 traveled to Arizona for spring training. The VSA Track Club, now known as RunVassar, continues to serve the Vassar community's running interests outside of intercollegiate track competition, including maps, training information and road race sponsorship.
