Match 9: Wellesley def. Vassar
28-30, 29-31, 30-20, 30-14, 15-12

As they headed into the third game of the Seven Sisters Championship match with a 2-0 lead over Wellesley, the Vassar College women's volleyball team looked as if they might come away with their first tournament title since 1993. But Wellesley proved they were up for the challenge, as they came back to win the final three games on their way to collecting their tenth Seven Sisters title in the past twelve years.

Vassar lost its momentum in the third game, when Wellesley senior Murielle Dawdy (Larkspur, CA/Redwood), the Tournament MVP, sent a kill down the sideline to give her team the lead at 10-8. Wellesley then rounded out the game with a solid 20-12 run, and finished 30-20 as they headed into the fourth game.

The fourth game was all Wellesley, as they established an early 16-6 lead and stretched the gap to 17 points at 24-7. The Blue benefited from a great defensive effort by junior Emily Peters (Temescal Valley, CA/Villa Parks), who finished with 19 digs in the contest. In the fifth and final game, Vassar fell behind but tied it up at 6-6 when Alia Al-Khatib (Port Charlotte, FL/Choate Rosemary) sent a kill down the middle of the court. Wellesley then closed out the match and secured the Championship with a 15-12 decision.

Despite losing control of the match in the final three games, the Brewers fought hard throughout the first two, winning each by two points. They fell behind 20-13 in the first but fought back, reeling off a 13-6 run to tie the game at 26-26 when sophomore Tess Johnson (Henderson, NV/Green Valley) sent a kill over the net. Vassar closed out the game 30-28, and came back again in the following game to win 31-29 and carry a 2-0 lead into the third game, but the Blue took over from there.

Vassar falls to 16-6 following the two-day tournament, and Wellesley is now 16-3.

Named to the All-Tournament Team was Julia Harris (Newbury Park, CA/Newbury Park) from Bryn Mawr College, Catherine Shafer (Red Bluff, CA/Red Bluff) from Smith College, Amanda Hsiung (Takoma Park, MD/Blair) and Al-Khatib from Vassar College, and Tracy Waldman (Seattle, WA/Roosevelt) from Wellesley. Dawdy was named the Tournament's Most Valuable Player.

Match 8: Smith def. Bryn Mawr
30-16, 33-31, 31-29

In a match not indicative of the final outscome, Smith earned 4th place with a 3-0 sweep over Bryn Mawr. In the second and third games, Bryn Mawr led Smith for most of the match, only to make costly errors down the stretch that enabled Smith to post the victory. After getting soundly beaten in the first game, one in which Bryn Mawr was close only once at 8-6 -- Smith had a pair of ten points leads and was never challenged -- the Owls played decidedly different in the final two games. Bryn Mawr raced out to a 9-3 lead to start the second game and maintained a 20-13 lead before Smith made its move. Smith was able to tie the match at 25-25 and from that point on, the contest see-sawed back and forth with the Owls holding off Smith on three match points -- 29-28, 30-29 and 31-30. During these tense exchanges, Smith got exceptional play from senior Catherine Shafter (Red Bluff, CA/Red Bluff) who had two big kills down the stretch, one to make it 31-30 and the other that made it 32-31. Smith won the second game on a Bryn Mawr attack error. Not to be deterred, Bryn Mawr didn't fold in the third game. The Owls never trailed in the early stages but in a match that featured eight ties, Smith once again came back with a strong attacking game. The turning point came with Bryn Mawr ahead 17-13. Both teams exchanged in a long, athletic rally that resulted in a net violation by Bryn Mawr. From that point, Smith was able to tie the match at 18-18 and forge ahead to a 21-19 lead. The match was tied late, 28-28, but not unlike the second game, Smith had the whereabouts to close out Bryn Mawr for a 31-29 victory. In the loss, Bryn Mawr played well, led by Julia Harris (Newbury Park, CA/Newbury Park) with 12 kills, Katie Kronbergs (Austin, TX/Lyndon B. Johnson) with 10 kills and Elizabeth Sinclair (Indialantic, FL/Eau Gallie) with 8 kills. Three players had double figures in digs -- Sinclaire had 20, Ashton Shaffer (Chesapeake, VA/Greenbrier Christian) had 15 and Katie Sollok (Lebanon, NJ/North Hunderton) had 12. For Smith, Shafter had 8 kills and Alexandra Risssi (Scottsdale, AZ/Xavier College Prep) had 6. Bethany Weiss (Windham, NH/Salem) had 20 assists and Brianne Connizzo (Demarest, NJ/Northern Valley) and Mikal Minarich (Hobart, IN/River Forest) had 8 digs each.

30-26, 30-11, 30-21

In their final match of the 2007 Seven Sisters’ Volleyball Tournament, the Mount Holyoke Lyons earned 5th place by defeating Elms Blazers, 30-26, 30-10, and 30-21. The first game of the match started out even until Mount Holyoke went on an 8-0 run with freshman setter Kateryna Kuc (New Haven, CT) serving, opening up their lead to 13-3. Elms made a great comeback to tie the game at 16 thanks to spectacular play by Freshman Jeannette Nunez (Canovanas, Puerto Rico/Colegio Maria Auxiliadora), who recorded 14 kills and 6 digs in the match. Mount Holyoke was able to gain control of the game and eventually get the 30-26 win after some stellar kills by sophomore Kendall Burns (Houston, TX/Bellaire), who had an impressive 7 kills and 8 digs in the match. Mount Holyoke dominated the second game of the match right from the start, jumping out 6-0 behind the serving of Senior Rachel West (St. Paul, MN/Central), who had 7 digs and 20 assists in the match. Despite a great effort  by Sophomore Kimberly Phillips (Randloph, MA/Blue Hills Regional), who recorded an incredible 28 assists in the match, the Blazers could never cut into the Mount Holyoke lead, and the Lyons took the second game easily, 30-10. Once again the Lyons jumped out in front early, leading 7-0 behind the serving of freshman Rosa Marruffo (Tulsa, OK/ Bishop Kelley), who recorded an amazing 8 aces in the match. Elms was able to cut down the Mount Holyoke lead thanks to some solid kills by sophomore Melissa Clark (Chicopee, MA/ Chicopee Comprehensive), who had 8 kills and 9 digs in the match to go along with 3 blocks. Match 1: Smith def. Elms
30-12, 30-15, 30-16

Smith College made quick work of Elms, winning convincing in three straight. In each of the three games, the Pioneers jumped out to big leads and were never challenged. Smith was able to win the long rallies and capitalized on Elms miscues throughout. The first game started with a 13-3 Smith lead continued to escalate from that juncture. Although Smith jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the second game, it was the most competitive match of the three. Elms narrowed a Smith lead to 13-10 and twice got within four points at 14-10 and 17-3. Each time, Smith answered with a big run to close out the game. The closest Elms came was 17-13. The third and decisive game started out tightly, with Smith ahead 8-6 and 15-11, but like each of the previous two games, pulled away with aggressive attacking. Match 2: Vassar def. Mount Holyoke
30-20, 30-26, 30-16

In the opening round of the 2007 Seven Sisters Tournament at the Athletics & Fitness Center, the Vassar College women's volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 victory over Mount Holyoke College.

Mount Holyoke kept the first two games relatively close, capitalizing on a number of runs that forced Vassar to apply more offensive pressure. In the second game, Vassar jumped to a quick 5-0 lead, with senior Amanda Hsiung (Takoma Park, MD/Blair) serving up a pair of aces. The Brewers looked as if they might run away with the game when they took a 20-11 lead, but Mount Holyoke came back to tie it up at 26-26 before surrendering the last four points to drop the second game, 30-26.

The first game featured six ties before the hosts took control courtesy of a kill from sophomore Caitlin Ly (Chicago, IL/Clayton) to tie the game at 12-12. Vassar then reeled off an 18-8 run to win the opener 30-20. Match 3: Wellesley def. Elms
30-10, 30-16, 30-11

In the opening game of the match, Wellesley immediately set the tone as the more powerful team, jumping out to a 5-0 lead from which they would not look back. The Blazers were not able to put together a run, as they did not string together consecutive points once in the match. Wellesley put together a 9-0 run behind service of Lauren Rasmussen (Bonita, CA/Bonita Vista) to take a 21-5 lead and take firm control of the first game, en route to a 30-10 win.

The second game, though closer, was also all Wellesley. The Blue opened the game with a 4-1 lead, and though the young Blazers put together a 3-0 run to cut the lead to 13-7, they would get no closer for the rest of the game, which Wellesley won 30-16. Elms found some momentum and started the third game of the match off with a 5-0 run behind service of Amanda Konsewicz (Westfield, MA/Westfield). But the powerful Wellesley offense and costly Elms errors proved too much to overcome, as the Blue went on to tie the game at 6 and follow with a 10-0 run to take the final game of the match, 30-11.

Tracy Waldman (Seattle, WA/Roosevelt) and and Arcadia Payne (Durango, CO/Durango) paced Wellesley with 8 aand 7 kills respectively. Victoria Peng led Wellesley with 15 assists.
